How do you hunt shiny's Heidi? I thought their appearance was random, like one in every 8000 or so. Is there some way to cause them to appear or make their appearance more likely?

I intend on making a guide for cuccoscratch for this now that I FINALLY get it! Lol. Using the pokeradar there is a method you can use (though quite difficult) to increase your chances of encountering shinies. I need to make a .jpg of this.... but for now this will have to do. Check out this grid. You remember in algebra, the x,y coordinates? You can go to places like 4, 2 -4, 2 etc etc. It has to be on the 4 perimeter too... and there are some other rules as well. I'll draw up the grid for you later, ok? This really isn't a proper explanation, but I'm at work and I'm going to grab my lunch. sorry!

So in addition to grass falling on edges and corners, 4 or less spaces in a straight line from oneself won't work? I think I understand. Thanks Heidi.

Anything that isn't highlighted in purple is a patch I'd avoid if it's shaking.
Also, you want to always go into a patch that shakes the same as the first one you entered. The only exception is the flashy flashy shiney shiney one after you reach 40 chains.

Wow. I almost never am sucessfull when I go shiny hunting. XD
In all my pokemon history I have caught two shinys. One of them was a ponyta!!! It looked awesome. The flames on its back was blue, not red.
That was on an old file though. On my current file I have none.

Shiny ponyta IS cool. If I make a habit out of this shiny hunting stuff I'll have to do a ponyta at some point

Most I've gotten was 11 Ponytas in a chain while shiny hunting. Never caught a shiny before... I'll try some more shiny hunting one of these days.
*is still happy with her uber awesome shiny Charizard*

I tried some shiny hunting last night, btw. I've developed a strategy: bring one of my 100's to pwn the shit out of anything I run into that's NOT shiny, and if I ever encounter a shiny I'll switch to an equivalent level. Course, I could just have my Marowak use False Swipe but I'm getting tired of switching moves on him, since two are TM moves and I can't remember if Double Edge was a level up move for him or not... And I'd be in big trouble if I go into a big battle and forgot to give him Bonemerang back. So I bred him with a Ditto and he now has a daughter who I'll be powerleveling until she can take his place as my catcher. (Switched out in front of a level 60 Raichu and she jumped 8 levels! Imagine what the Elite Four will do for her!) And Hen, that guide really helps! I chained Geodudes last night. Forgot how many but it went on for a while. No shinys though... Something I'd like to know is... what if out of all your shaking options NONE appear in the "safe" zone? Go for the furthest one away from you? That's what I do...

Shiny hunting is pretty much all I do on Pokemon Pearl anymore. I take my level 95 Persian and I use PayDay so as to beef up my bankroll. For anything that might be able to survive a single hit of PayDay I use Fake Out first. If I encounter a shiny I usually try a Quick Ball first. If I must I use my Gengar to put the shiny to sleep and/or my Kricketune to False Swipe them down to 1 hp. Thus far in my shiny hunting endeavors I have acquired four Floatzel, four Makuhita, four west Shellos, four Sneasel, two Dunsparce, five Farfetch'd, two Skarmory, three Phanpy, four Zigzagoon, four Surskit, three Nosepass (one evolved to Probopass), four Spoink, one Electrike, and one Shinx. I tried to get one shiny for every evolution of each pokemon that I was able to get a shiny for, for instance I got enough Phanpy to keep a shiny one as well as evolve one to a Donphan. I traded some of my shinys to my son.

Then you should walk enough steps to reset the radar and continue to do so until you get a safe option.

I've actually been having good luck maintaining a chain by just going for the furthest one if no "safe" option is available. Better than wasting time resetting my radar.
Right now I'm just focusing on powerleveling Huntress (Marion the Marowak's daughter) so I'll have a high level false swiper without having to constantly change Marion's moveset.

Whatcha need is a high leveled smeargle with spore and all those other good moves. If we have a cloner around here I can get mine cloned and distribute it to those of you who are regulars and want to try out the shiny hunting thing. And kstar, no, it's not better. It's not better because they're not safe and it could ruin and waste all the time you put into chaining in the first place. Yes, I'm speaking from experience
