Water for water types? Harden heat areas for fire types? Grasslands or forests for grass types? A relaxing spot?

*contains spoilers*

A recent Japanese episode "Farewell! Dustox." (which reminds me of Bye Bye Butterfree, the first episode I actually choked on) shows Jessie smashing the Pokeball and inside the Pokeball looks technological with red linings and a gray shell. How can a Pokemon resize inside the Pokeball when they zap an energy coming from the Pokeball itself? I'm not sure if there was an episode telling how the Pokeball is created or how it works, but I do remember the Pokeball designer Kurt from Johto making custom pokeball's for certain Pokemon like Snorlax coming in a heavy ball. How do they work is a mystery to me. The anime shows Pokemon coming in and out, but what's life like? I do remember seeing an episode where Misty gets Psyduck by accident since Psyduck just went to her empty pokeball and taps its bill at ball and when the narrator speaks, we see Pysduck in a gray circle when the outside is dark. Come share your thoughts on how Pokemon live in pokeballs and what life is like!

Well not to take the mystery out of it, but I just as much assume that it's.... just a writer's ploy of 'making it work'.

But if I was to guess how it is 'In Character', I'd say it's possibly some kind of suspended-animation of their body, but they're still conscious.  They just can't do anything, except for certain ones like Psyduck of course.

As Magnus said, I imagine that the PokeMon are in a state of suspended animation. That or they are miniature versions of themselves inside of a tiny little home ala I Dream of Jeannie.

I remember hearing somewhere that they're put in their own little virtual world or something, and they can interact with other Pokemon in the party while in the balls. Kinda like the Pokemon Boxes.

Thinking back on my earlier post, I think I believe the latter. If the Pokemon were in a state of suspended animation, how could they break out of the ball when you are trying to catch them?

Maybe it puts them in a dreamlike state and only the most stubborn, energetic pokémon are able to break free of the mental haze.

The apricorn pokéballs could be coated with potent sleeppowder inside. The metallic, high-tech ones could rely on radio frequencies that interfere with most pokemon's brainwaves in a way that prettymuch immobilizes them-- while turning their molecules into pure red energy. Perhaps the mirrors keep the energy contained as it bounces against the walls.

I'm not sure how the homemade ones from Kurt accomplish that same miracle of mass to energy in such a small space, but every craft has its secrets.

To be honest I like the mystery of it.  *shrugs*  Sure, I've wondered, but I'd rather not get a real answer from Nintendo, you know?

There's an element of Pokemon at its base that I still find so appealing.
