As of lately, Sega isn't doing the poor hedgehog much good with glitch infested and rushed games with poor controls and bad camera settings such as Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) for the xbox360, and playstation3 ...that this die hard Sonic fan found hard to enjoy... From the start, I loved there fast 2D side scrolling concept... the music had this charm to it and the game could be played time after time. It was when Mario actually had to compete with Sonic -- now we know THATS long gone lol but what was it that sent Sonic down the drain? Was it the fact that the dreamcast failed due to the superiority of the playstation 2 and bad marketing... or was it the introduction of the now popular 3D gaming that destroyed Sonics game. As much as it is number 1... I think number 2 is too -- we are now aware that Sega needs to stick with Sonics roots and stop trying to make him look so 'bad ass' and to stop including new characters but rather stick with the oldies. I am aware of the bad reputation Sonic has for his games but Sega seems aware of that. The titles such as Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush adventure stick to the old formula with 2D side scrolling and yes... some 3D but its acceptable that way because its back to the way we used to enjoy Sonic games! Fast, minimal character choice, and of course fun. Unlike Sonic and the Secret rings, it's new formula was fun but didn't seem to work for me as much as the original one does. Giving a huge budget according to some reading, Sega is putting together a game which consist of minimal characters... Sonic, Tails and Knuckles which can be played through out the levels... catchy music that has you tapping your foot or waggling you finger too and ...lets not forget the SPEED! It's fast! Looks FUN... and it seems they made him less bad ass and more... original looking. The 2D side scrolling is back thank GOD and on a console too... It could be the true beginning of Sonics bounce back and lessen his bad reputation or it might not do so good like the rest of his previous 3D games did leaving the Sonic Rush series out of the mix. OR... it might not... we don't know for sure but I can say this video makes me quite content. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AO5H9seoq8gI just love that music and the general set up of the game Anyways, these are my thoughts... if your up for a long read that is.

I'm very cautious about this game.
I'm not saying that I'm part of the 'it's cool to hate Sonic' crowd that's been out there these days. Honestly, I think most of those people haven't even played the 3D Sonic games...the only one I could possibly agree on is StH2k6, which I would cite as awful just on the inclusion of an archaic/cliche storyline. (But then I'm guilty of not having played that one.....but for obvious reasons(it's on a system I don't own).)
Anyway, as much as I actually DO like most of the 3D Sonic games, that doesn't mean that I automatically think this one looks good.
To get this out of the way: I think Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the absolute best Sonic game in existance. It beats the 3D games, it beat Secret Rings, and it beats out both DS games and all GBA games in my opinion. So every new Sonic game automatically gets compared to that game.
So far, Unleashed is getting a few things right: focusing on speed, using a 2D presentation for the most part, and from what I hear, including a hub world again(it at least implies that you WILL see a level-to-level progression, like in S3&K, which told a story without words by at LEAST showing you how you got to the next Act/Zone, rather than just plopping you down into a new Act/Zone like every other Sonic game before/after it did).
But if there was one thing that just sort of tipped it all out of balance, it was the most obvious: the werewolf thing. Sonic is already an anthro-hedgehog, natural yes, but still a sentient/self-aware standing upright on two legs. What the heck do I care if he's a hedgehog or wolf? It just doesn't make any sense. I know that they'll pull the ol' plotstrings to FORCE it to make sense, but I'm not satisfied with that really. I don't want it....Sonic-turning-into-a-werewolf was never part of what made Sonic games fun...it just seems like something they cooked up to make the game 'unique', and I guarantee that's mostly what's behind it. So I'm bothered by their decision to include something so flaky.....if they really CAN make it work, fine, but I don't think it needed it.
All I want is multi-leveled Acts/Zones that have an interesting design like S3&K had, multiple paths to take, hidden things to find/explore for, and optional chaos emeralds that are tough to get, but reward you with 'unlimited powerrrrrrrr' and a better ending. If Unleashed can do that, that'll be great. If it can't, eh, it'll probably still be a decent Sonic game that I can at least somewhat enjoy, but I'll still always wish they could expand on S3&K.

I don't like Sonic, and not because I'm part of that crowd Magnus mentioned. I don't like him because I haven't played a new game that didn't suck in a very long time. I own the Sonic Mega Collection: Those Games Rock. I also own Sonic Adventure 2: Battle and Shadow the Hedgehog - those suck.
I've played Secret Rings, and while it was better than the other 3D takes, it's still "meh" at best.
Sonic Unleashed looks great. I love the way the new engine looks, but I am taking a cautious approach. Especially with the little teaser trailer than seems to imply that Sonic will become a werewolf or werehedgehog or whatever. They don't need a new spin on things. Just give me a Sonic game like the old ones and I'd be happy to buy it.
So, we'll see what happens with this one. Hopefully it won't suck.

I personally am really looking foward to this one. Its the first decent-looking Sonic console game I've seen in...years, or so it seems. And hopefully the whole werewolf thing will add a new twist to the mix that doesent off-balance things, while still keeping the gameplay true to its roots. I liked the whole Sonic Adventure series, mainly because the controls were pretty stable and easy to use, though the 3d games went downhill from there in my oppinion atleast. I dont think that I've really liked a single 3D Sonic game since then...the only decent Sonic game I've seen since was Sonic Rush, and we all know why that is. (incase you actually dont...its because it actually went back to its 2dimensional roots, gameplay-wise.) If they kept putting new 2d Sonic games onto shelves, they might actually get rid of his bad reputation...which I'm all for.

I like the idea of it being just Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. I love playing as Knuckles. It looks amazing though. Also Sega seems to have scrapped the realistic feel of some of the other Sonic games.

Just thinking on the update brought up on GoNintendo a few days ago, I kind of think the game makes a little more sense now. Story-wise anyway. Something like how Sonic was hunting down Eggman in space(like usual), when Eggman finally takes advantage of the fact that Sonic always seems to transform into Super Sonic, and catches him in a machine that corrupts the very emeralds that he's currently using. It also kinda makes the whole 'wolf transformation' thing make sense, as if the now-corrupted emeralds are causing that sort of transformation rather than the usual Super Sonic.
Anyway, while I'm still a bit annoyed at things(especially now knowing that since he has the emeralds, and is taking them to different locations to un-corrupt them, that you won't be collecting them optionally like in the 2D games), I think it's starting to look decent. Honestly I wish they would back off on making the whole cutscene business....my own favorite 'Sonic 3 & Knuckles' makes great use of Story Without Words, not just to tell what's going on, but my favorite part, to show WHY you're in the next Act or Zone, which Sonic games before and even after it weren't so good at doing.

It's not really surprising that Sonic games have been an up and down roller coaster for me. I didn't have a Genesis when I was little, but one of my best friends did. She'd come to my house to play Nintendo stuff, and I'd go to her house to play Sega stuff. Needless to say, Sonic was one of the games I would always play at her house. My favorite was Sonic the Hedgehog 2. So, ever since then, I've followed the series somewhat. I actually got into the Sonic games for the Game Gear, since I got a GG for Christmas one year. Man, I used to love me some Sonic The Hedgehog 1 & 2 as well as Triple Trouble on the GG. Then I remember playing Sonic Adventure for the DreamCast, and that was pretty sweet. One of the 3D Sonic games that actually worked really well for me. I've played the Sonic Rush games on the DS ... the first one was good, the second one was meh. But it kind of proved that Sonic feels more at home in a 2D sidescroller ... Anyway, enough rambling. The only 3D Sonic games I have played completely are Sonic Adventure (DC), Sonic DX or whatever (the port of Sonic Adventure for the GCN), and Sonic Heroes. After Sonic Heroes, and watching what people say about the 3D Sonic games made after that, I kind of just stayed away. But, to get to the point, Sonic Unleashed does look pretty promising. I'm hoping it can be a stable Sonic game without straying too far away from the series. I just may have to keep my eyes out on this title.

Well like I mentioned in another post, I'm pretty tolerant of even the 3D games, but I hold a VERY very high standard for Sonic 3 + Knuckles, which I still use to judge the other games on, and nothing after it has been quite as good(even considering the decently-good GBA and DS games). Oddly I even don't mind Shadow, which is almost universally hated(but because the PS2 port SUCKED, and no one really got into it before taking it back).
Anyway, I just saw a video of Were-Sonic's gameplay, and I'm taken aback a little bit. Just in my last post, I said that the story for justifying Were-Sonic was good, and on that I still agree. But now that I see him playing, I have to say: that's exactly the way Knuckles plays in the 3D Sonic games. So why do we really need Were-Sonic, when it does NOTHING to improve the Sonic-game-experience, except basically putting Knuckles' powers in the place of Sonic's alter-ego? I mean that's basically all it is....the only 'new' thing is that it's Sonic doing them: the usual ground-pounds-to-destroy-nearby-enemies, jump-swipes/punches, not-quite-as-fast, climbing/jumping around walls, etc.
Well like I said, I'm pretty tolerant, and the game and levels look decent, but I'm still thinking "all they did was put a Sonic costume on Knuckles and call it 'Were-Sonic' or whatever they're calling him". I wish it was a little more unique.

Lol, an old thread... my views on this game were destroyed by the sole fact of the werehog. I was meaning to update this later on in life but while I'm here I guess I can say... It's still alright, ...half of it or less then half of the game is alright considering the day time stages are bloody fun. Minus the fact that you can pretty much call the X button on the 360 controller cruise control as you plow your way though everything not knowing where your going. Playing the stages well enough to get a good rank required much trial and error and more memorization then quick thinking. The Wii version lets you think a little because of the limited boosts. Umm, music is brilliant. I really like it... no butt rock yay? I enjoy it but the fact that you dread doing werehog levels JUST to get to the daytime stages doesn't seem like an attractive quality in a game for me. The cinematics are like PIXAR quality, if they run and go forward with they're V&E animation studio and make somewhat of a series or movies of some-sort IN 3D THAT would be cool... but alas I am still sketchy, Sega seems to let me down now-a-days. Anyways, thats my point-blurb or ...re-blurb I should say about the game that I was disappointed in. OHHHHWELL.

No butt rock yay? I don't know, Sonic with no butt rock is like RE without corny dialogue.
