I like just about any game as long as it is a quality game. I even like some games that are average as long as they are enjoyable. I don't really care for simulation type games or realistic sports games, but I can have fun playing them. I don't think that there is a genre that I just really don't like or am opposed to playing.

RPGs with real-time battles. RPGs with turn based battles that still let me directly control the characters ( like Pokémon Mystery Dungeon) 3rd person view AdvEnture (Legend of Zelda, kinda) karaoke/music games a few puzzle games (Tetris Attack/Pokémon Puzzle League) simulation/city building games-- until I feel guilty about how many hours I've wasted making a city that is still bleeding money.
Things I really don't enjoy much: platformers (Mario games are an exception) realistic sports games most racing games 1st person anything - I struggle enough orientating myself with 3rd person view. <_<

I was a fan of RPGs, but now the games repeat themselves in both battle engine and story line. It's like the gaming industry has lost all creativity in this department.
Simple games seem to catch my interest, so I have to say I enjoy platformers, arcade, and puzzle/strategy the most.

Okay, I feel kind of stupid, but what kind of genre is shmups? My favorite genres are platformer, action/adventure, puzzles, and arcade for the most part. I absolutely LOVE point-and-click type adventure games, which is almost a dead genre, sadly. The DS has revived it somewhat with games like Trace Memory and Hotel Dusk, but it's still not a strong genre today. I do like certain simulation games ... like Trauma Center. I don't like simulation games in the sense of Sim City, Animal Crossing, etc. I'm not a big fan of RPGs, but there are exceptions to those as well. Basically, I'm not extremely picky, I'll play any game that looks interesting to me. But I guess adventure and platformers are definitely my favorites.

I forgot about the point-and-click adventure games! I use to love playing King's Quest and the Day of the Tentacle for my PC. They were so simple, yet so frustrating. I loved 'em. Whatever happened to these types of games? I've never heard of Shmups either

Hrm, honestly, I'm a fan of any kind of game so long as it has a good story, or extremely well done gameplay. Oh, except First Person Shooters. I hate First Person Shooters. 3rd Person is a different story however

The "Metroid" genre is my favorite. So, I guess that would be platforming, adventure, action and shooting all bundled into one. I usually like action games though (Metroid, Mario Kart, Pikmin, etc).

Silly Hippo and Boogie, shmups are shoot-em'-ups. You know... R-Type, Ikaruga, Gradius, that kind of stuff. You could also say Star Fox is as shmups in its own rights.
