E3 2008: Wii Remote Gets More Motion
Nintendo will reveal the MotionPlus accessory at this year's show.
by Craig Harris and Mark Bozon

July 14, 2008 - Players wondering if we'd ever see a true 1:1 experience on Wii need to wonder no more, as Nintendo announced today a new plug-in peripheral for the Wii remote, currently called Wii MotionPlus. Details are sparse so far, but Nintendo revealed the first snippets of information in a press release this morning. The following statement is -- in its entirety -- Nintendo's announcement of MotionPlus for Wii:

"Nintendo's upcoming Wii MotionPlus accessory for the revolutionary Wii Remote controller again redefines game control, by more quickly and accurately reflecting motions in a 3-D space. The Wii MotionPlus accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive tracking of a player's arm position and orientation, providing players with an unmatched level of precision and immersion. Every slight movement players make with their wrist or arm is rendered identically in real time on the screen, providing a true 1:1 response in their game play. The Wii MotionPlus accessory reconfirms Nintendo's commitment to making games intuitive and accessible for everyone. Nintendo will reveal more details about the Wii MotionPlus accessory and other topics Tuesday morning at its E3 media briefing."

The MotionPlus peripheral.

What we don't know, however, is how exactly MotionPlus will work with nunchuk controls, as the peripheral would need some sort of pass-through in order to give 1:1 motion to titles requiring analog control. The first shot above shows a small plug in the bottom of the attachment, which looks to be covering just such port, but we'll wait on Nintendo to give the final confirmation. Will we see first-person shooters that can make use of this technology? Will LucasArts find a way to adapt the upcoming Clone Wars game to include true 1:1 lightsaber technology, or could Nintendo beat them to it with a pack-in Link's Sword Fighting game (or news of a new Zelda Wii) to showcase MotionPlus? Will some sort of future "Wii-mote 2.0" automatically include MotionPlus, removing the need for an additional add-on peripheral? We'll have to wait and see how exactly the new technology works, and all signs point to Nintendo's keynote just 24 hours from now.

Not to step on Sonic's toes, but I thought I'd upload it real fast since I can just right-click on images in my folders and upload it with just a click... so let's hope this works for ya Hen(although honestly the information is more important since you can't see too much anyway):

Looks like it requires a new remote-glove though.

Also, I saw that the 360 went down in price, and will include a new model that has 80gb of HDD....not quite the 120gb that the high-end model has, but cheaper.  Kinda nice I guess.  Not that it matters much to me, there still isn't any game I'm interested in for the 360, and not having WIFI support out of the box is lame.  (Not to mention the death-rate, but that's a whole different post.)

I wouldn't mind keeping updates tomorrow for Nintendo's E3 conference.....but it's one of the few times I'm actually busy on a Tuesday, so I really can't help.  Sorry.

I just read that on NSider2's Wii General Discussion board(oddly)...can't help but laugh a little inside.  I still don't like the FF series though, so I can't say I'm thrilled really.....it does seem like Squeenix said something about how the White Engine was pretty much made into the 'Crystal Engine' that can be used on all three systems, and now here we have FFXIII on 360.

OH right ----- and Microsoft just officially 'copied' Miis and.... apparently also the Photo Channel...I just know they changed the interface to something new that a lot of people are saying they don't really like, and some how mimics the whole 'channels' bit.

Thanks for doing that MAGNUS

I was also wondering that. Is it an entire new jacket or just a mini jacket to go with the MotionPlus?
I'm thinking an entire new jacket since the little tab that covers the extension port would have no place to go - there's not enough room to fold it back.

Either way I am super excited about this.

Microsoft released its new dashboard setup allowing the ability to have custom avatars and  have parties with you friend and play various game, share picture and even watch movies together from Netflix. They also released launch dates of Resident Evil 5, Fallout 3, Gears of War 2, and Fable 2 and announced Final Fantasy 13. So you can see that 3rd party developers are leaving Sony since it is in dead last in the console war. Also Microsoft is also supporting games for everyone like banjo kazooie and xbox live marketplace games like uno and geometry wars 2.

I don't think they completely copied miis because the PS3 has something of that sort coming out and Xbox is just following suit and kinda making them better. Well that is what I heard from G4 before the commercial free press conference. Hen I hope you can see tomorrow's press conferences because it is going to be Sony and Nintendo's at 1:00 PM EST or maybe it is noon EST on G4.

I figured that was the case, that's why I kinda hesitated to mention it....that's mostly NS2's idea on the matter....ah well.  Either way, they did make a good chunk of their presentation geared towards casuals because of Nintendo's influence, and the audience was more or less filled with the type who dislike that part of Nintendo...was kinda funny.  At the same time, they take part of Sony's thunder from the whole FFXIII thing, if it's still a big deal(I really don't follow how popular they still are or aren't, so I dunno).

So far it's kind of a confusing rush of different things, like I said, MS taking the casual riff from Nintendo and kinda looking like fools, but taking from Sony and looking like heros(as well as a few of their own games up their sleeve)...it's really hard to tell at this point how it's all going to work out for them.  I really do hope things work out well for Nintendo, if only because I still feel irritated from the time it was deemed 'kiddy' and into now where people say 'casual', but still insinuate 'kiddy'.  Although I do have a feeling Sony's going to whip out something undeniable, but I wouldn't be surprised if they try to pull their 'usual', doing things they know are 'popular', but doing it wrong enough that it just never pans out well for them.  Either way, it's not like I have the money for PS3 OR 360, so I'm just giong to have to see what happens and evaluate it all after the shows are done.

@Sonic: No prob~!  I'm also excited, but still confused....but awkward since I know I'll know more about it tomorrow.  (Seriously, I can't believe I'm busy tomorrow, gah.  I REALLY hope I can just hold out on looking up the info before I find the posted video.)  Y'know, I would almost think they'd make you use TWO WiiMotion Plus wii-remotes rather than mess with nunchuck stuff, but I'da know.  We'll probably know tomorrow... >.>;

@HEN: No prob....and I'm not sure either really, because I never was into FF games.  I played the first two and felt bored.  I BOUGHT the DS remake of FFIII that everyone liked, and I couldn't stand it.....the difficulty balance was just so SHARP, as soon as you were powerful enough to barely defeat a boss, you were right smack in an area where you were too weak to defeat menial enemies.  x_x;  It was a real chore to grind on....and that's about all I can think of looking at any FF game, even for 7~12.  Makes it hard to believe they also made Chrono Trigger and most of Mario RPG.

But I'm sure it's something a lot of fans really want, so I dunno, I'm looking around at fan reactions here and there, but haven't seen too much just yet..

Hmmzz... Well... Here's my take on the news...

(Nintendo & Wii Motion)

-The Good
-- Hard to say at this point. Better movement measurements are always good for a console whose main feature is motion control.

-The Bad
-- I'm afraid at how much these are going to cost me.
-- I hope that developers will know how to actually use these in GOOD ways.

-The huh?
-- Yeah, I got nothin.

(XBox 360 & New Dashboard)

-The Good
-- Despite everyone's enthusiasm, I look forward to this as long as it adds something nifty to my experience.
-- I hope that it'll allow me to find things easier, shop easier, and something to dink around with.

-The Bad
-- It does seem kind of cheap that they're copying the "Mii Concept".
-- This had better not remove my current gamertag picture. I like the simple picture of Master Chief on it.

-The huh?
-- ... They'd better be ready for millions of clones... Millions... upon millions... of clones...

(XBox 360 and Final Fantasy 13)

-The Good
-- Microsoft now has something incredibly powerful at their disposal. They're could have an honest-to-God chance of getting further into the Japanese market. Assuming that the game is not also released on the PS3.
-- Final Fantasy fans are probably already salivating over the next release.

-The Bad
-- 13... the number could speak for itself.
-- A PS3 release goobers up the chances to use FF 13 as a deadly spearhead into Japan.
-- The story is going to be epic, but the question remains HOW epic.

-The huh?
-- ... The name lies.

@Kyosaber:  Last I read, it was and still is coming out for the PS3, in every territory that I know of.  But so far, it's for 360 only in North America and Europe.  Not that I care, I could do without Sony personally, but a lot of people are kind of getting a different idea of what they're saying.  I do still think it'll have an impact(because if I actually wanted the game, I'd probably just get it on 360), but even if it was on 360 in Japan, I doubt it'd do much for them.

The whole MotionPlus add-on does sound pretty cool, actually. Yes, it's annoying that I'll have to buy yet another accessory for the Wii, and most likely, a new glove, but whatever. I won't get it right away (although that may be a curse, because it seems to be a pattern if you don't get something for the Wii right away, then you aren't going to be able to find it when you do want it) ... I want to see how well it works first. If developers put it to good use, then I'll definitely consider buying one.

It is kind of cheap that Microsoft is kind of biting off the "Mii concept", but they are doing it their own way that makes it a little unique. I mean, it is a good idea and all, so I guess Nintendo should take that as a compliment? I dunno. I don't have a 360 (yet) so I'm not completely familar with how everything works on it anyway.

Final Fantasy news doesn't bother me. I'm not a big fan of the series.

I look forward to what Nintendo has to announce today ... hopefully it will be some good stuff.
