Apparently Sega is making a Sonic game Wii exclusive along with Sonic Unleashed and the Dark brotherhood. Also, sonic uses a sword... serriously what? Not much information is known but I think it could be a sequel to the secret rings.

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (July 21, 2008) –SEGA of Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced Sonic™ and the Black Knight, an all-new Wii-exclusive adventure. Part of the storybook series of games that began with Sonic and the Secret Rings, this new title brings Sonic into the world of Arthurian legend and offers the worlds most infamous blue hedgehog the chance to become a knight. Using the unique Wii control system, this exciting game will take advantage of both the Wii Remote and the Nunchuk to offer an interactive experience that any Sonic fans will love.

Created by Sonic Team in Japan, this innovative game takes Sonic into a medieval world and arms him with a sword to aid in his effort to save the day. Sonic and the Black Knight will provide Sonic fans with an irresistible cast of characters and teach them all what it takes to be a true hero and the ultimate knight. With a series of missions taking place in stunning Arthurian-inspired locations, Sonic and the Black Knight promises to offer a fast-paced adventure that gamers of all ages will enjoy.

“After the success of Sonic and the Secret Rings we’re delighted to announce a second title in the Storybook Series,” said Gary Knight, European Marketing Director, SEGA Europe, “Following Sonic on his way to knighthood will excite players of all ages.”

Sonic and the Black Knight, exclusively for the Wii, will be out in Spring 2009.

I've been seeing this on GoNintendo, and I don't know what to think of it yet.... of course, the idea of WiiMotion Plus is helping at the moment, but you have to wonder why "The World's Fastest Hedgehog" is going to be something as slow and tedious as sword-slashing.  If it IS WiiMotion Plus oriented, couldn't they have used a different 'weapon' or whatever that Sonic, as a character, would have actually used?

For that matter, if it IS WiiMotion Plus, why didn't they bring back another one of their franchises to carry it?  WONDER BOY especially would have been awesome for this(although I admit, not well known, and possibly owned by Hudson, I'm not sure).  They could have done a one-player Shining Force game.  Or for that matter, something based off of the Phantasy Star timeline(not the Online games, but more like PS4).

But going along with your comment, now I DO think it has something to do with the previous game....sort of.  Maybe in the same line that he went through all of Arabia's storyline, maybe now he has to do something like.... 'Famous Old European Literature' storyline...or something.  Well, it's a thought.  Still, the whole Sonic-with-sword thing is difficult to imagine at the moment.

ACK, I knew it!

(The parts I was right about, anyway: )

- same dev team as Secret Rings

- “This time, a sorceress named Merlina summons Sonic to the mythical realm of King Arthur, but it seems the fabled monarch has somehow been corrupted and now rules the land as the tyranical Black Knight.”

- storybook telling like Secret Rings

And now for the rest, along with some of my commentary(both serious and not):
(SOURCE: http://gonintendo.com/?p=49982 )

- “As Sonic runs along, a simple flick of the Wii remote will execute a basic slash, which is enough to dispatch most low-level grunts.”
In other words, no WiiMotion Plus at this time.  GoNintendo did recently report a statement from developers saying that Nintendo didn't tell them ANYTHING about WiiMotion Plus.  Although, the way the game sounds, it doesn't need 1:1 because you're going fast the majority of the time anyway....but if there was a one-on-one battle, I'd wish it was 1:1.

- thrust, parry, and buzz-saw-like moves for the sword

- “During our demo, we saw the hedgehog leap from a high precipice, then thrust the blade into a wall to slow his decent, sparks flying impressively as steel cut through brick.”
Sounds like a special event... Sonic never needed to slow his descent from a fall in a normal Sonic game... you probably don't have the option, but have to do it at specific points.

- “Combat is integrated in such a way that most of the time you can slice through any who stand in your path without even slowing down.”
Sounds good, but makes me wonder ... 'why?'

- Control Sonic via joystick
Good, good..

- “Our hero begins his quest as a mere knave. Only by becoming a full-fledged knight will he have any hope of defeating King Arthur.”
I thought it was the Black Knight..?  Is King Arthur the Black Knight?(Checking back, yes, now he IS...)

- “his sword, a talking blade named Calibur, serves as a mentor.”
No.  No talking sword.......dangitthere'satalkingsword...crap.

- “If you help civilian townfolk in need of assistance, you’ll earn points toward knighthood. If you smite one of those civilians, your reputation will take a hit.”
Yay~~

- “At the end of each stage, the game tallies your good and not-so-good deeds and updates your rank accordingly.”
Welcome back, "Shadow", whoo! (I think..)

- “Sonic can aquire everything from gauntlets to magical tomes to new swords, and when equipped, each article bestows him with a unique benefit.”
Maybe those new swords won't talk.

- “On the audio side, veteran composer Jen Senoue is taking a smiliar approach, injecting familiar Sonic themes with a Celtic flavor.”
Why not, we've been through 80s metal, why not celtic flavor...

- Magic used to give Sonic extra powers. It looks as if Choas float around Sonic when magic is used
NO.

- 200 items, some can be combined with others
...why?

- go online to trade items
HmmmMmMmmmkay~..

- Rings no longer appear in computer monitors, but instead, sacks
NOOOOOOOOO-- wait, that makes sense........NOOOOOOO

- skill system from Secret Rings returns, but it will not interrupt the gameplay
PLEASE have a better menu...

- mission structure returns
So much for that.

- “Each stage has multiple branching paths and searching for townsfolk and treasure chests provides an element of exploration that recalls Sonic’s early Genesis days.”
PLEASE.  GENESIS DAIZ YEZ

- “The camera will occasionally pan to a side-scrolling perspective for a quick dose of classic 2-D action.”
Why do we bother with Sonic Unleashed again?  Oh well, give us both I guess.

- “And there will be no dinosaur eggs!”
THANK YOU.  Apologies to Yoshi.

- ”When people see that Sonic is wielding a sword, they’ll probably have certain expectations of the multiplayer mode. And all I can say is that we’re thinking along those same lines.”
No.  No you're not.  Dangitno.

- “Just as they subbed in for such characters as Ali Baba and Aladdin in Sonic and the Secret Rings, a number of familiar faces will assume Arthurian personas in SBK.”
EGGMAN AS MERLIN COMFIRMED(j/k)

- “This time, however, some of Sonic’s friends will be playable. Each hero will boast unique abilities, and though the team isn’t ready to divulge the full cast just yet, we do know the identities of two playable comrades: Knuckles, who brandishes two swords at once, and Shadow.”
No one else likes you Shadow, but I do.  Now, don't become the Black Knight at the end, because that would be entirely too obvious.

- there will be other characters, but you don’t have to play as them if you don’t want
I don't want to play as Blaze anyway.

- “While the old gauges from Secret Rings are gone, a new special gauge will “bestow him with similarly impressive powers. The meter fills gradually whenever Sonic vanquishes an enemy or snags a purple elemental, and when it reaches a certain point you can unleash a powerful combination attack capable of tearing through multiple foes in quick succession. You simply press the B button to lock onto the nearest enemy, flick the remote to strike him down, then press B again to move onto the next unfortunate soul. If you chain together enough smitings before the gauge is depleted, Sonic will receive a speed burst at the end of the string.”
The old powers are gone!  The old powers are back~!

- “the team behind Sonic and the Black Knight is keenly aware of the franchise’s past missteps, and their enthusiasm for doing right by the series is infections.”
Might be good or bad, depending on what the 'fans' and the Team consider good or bad...

It seems like it could actually be pretty good from this article, it could turn out to be complete crap or it could be an okay game. Kind of like Unleashed, no one knows if they will flop or not, I am looking forward to both.

Actually, I'm kinda looking forward to both as well...I just.. hope both are at least your typical 7~8 out of 10 ranged games.  NOT in the eyes of the reviewers so much as my own personal opinons on what makes a Sonic game good.

I really hope they build a better menu for the Secret-Rings sequel though.  SR's menu was one of the most off-putting things I had with that game....and from that, level-select structuring.  It just seemed like you had to wait wayyy too long between selecting different things, and everything felt just... lame.  But the game itself, I was only annoyed with the collect-a-missions(definately the dinosaur eggs like even THEY mentioned), and basically yeah, the same menu-aspect, this time in the form of the fact that you went back and forth from level to level over and over, with minimal changes, just to grab the right mission that lead to the emerald(sorry, RING) that you needed.  It made sense story-wise, and almost substituted for the OPTIONAL emerald-challenges that I liked the 2D games for, but it was tedious and made no sense gameplay wise.

I almost like that two Sonic games are coming out so close to each other....reminds me of the old Sonic 3 & Knuckles days, although it of course won't have nearly as much impact as those had.  Shame....but we'll see how these games come out..

I also like the fact that it will be using analog to move instead of the Secret rings just wii mote thing, it was alright but backing up was a pain.

Seriously, yeah....I forgot about that, backing up was mostly terrible.  Especially if you messed up, or took a hit while you were doing it, suddenly your position on the Wii Remote RESET, meaning you had to either twist it further back, or twist it forward real fast, then twist back again...which was annoying.  Using the nunchuck should help quite a bit, as long as it doesn't make the game pointless(I mean really, the motion controls were half the game in the first, so I wonder if the sword was put in almost entirely to make up for it, or whatever...)

I can pretty much say without much "investigation" that this game will be utterly ridiculous, but hey, that I got when i recieved a Nintendo Power with Sonic wielding a sword on it.  It's just not something that can be done without be inherently VERY silly.  Come on, he's swinging around a SENTIENT HELPER sword.  That's like giving Link a talking semi-automatic that says "HEY LOOK LISTEN FIIIRRREE!" ... it's just not Link nor is this Sonic.

Now the game could play just fine, I'm just saying Sega pretty much doesn't have a clue what Sonic is anymore.    Whatever, the "normal" games recently haven't been much better.  If giving Sonic a random sword fixes him, my good graces mi'lad.

I'm not even sure if Sonic Team or any of the orginal teams are working on this game.  I know at the very least that the team that worked on Secret Rings is doing it, so that helps.

They've tried to peg Sonic as many things over the years, always trying to make him more 'realistic' than even the 2D games were able to give him(and they did work well on their own honestly, especially S3&K), unfortunately leading up to the crap that was the PS360 game, making it into some kind of overworked FF story that really wasn't necessary for a Sonic game.

While I don't agree with the ones who attack 3D Sonic games, I can at least say that I know that they haven't been the same since going to 3D, especially with that progressively-over-the-top story bit.  SA1, 2, SH, and even Shadow had decent stories, but each got more and more 'out there', PS360 was REALLY out there, Secret Rings was almost not even a Sonic game, except that he was in it, and you ran fast.  This game also pushes things quite a bit......but after Secret Rings, I've just kind of accepted it a little.

It's definately going to be ridiculous... you just can't avoid that.  I'm going to hope that the game is at least as good or better than Secret Rings though, since I liked that game, but it had its own problems(ignoring the rediculousness anyway).  Ahh well, either way, I'm sure I'll end up getting that and Unleashed I suppose(unless the reviews are just SOOOOO terrible...but since those seem to come out way too late, I'm sure I'll have the game(s) before any reviews come out anyway).
