While many of you were sleeping last night, Nintendo had it's Media Summit in Japan. The highlights of what were announced are below, which include a new Nintendo DS, AAA Wii games, AAA DS games, and a storage solution.

    • Nintendo DSi

             - larger 3.25 inch screens
             - Two cameras (outside and inside on hinge)
                  - Photos can be synced with Wii Photo Channel
                  - Photos can be edited on the DS

             - Internal memory
             - No GBA slot
             - 12% thinner than DS Lite
             - Music playback
                  - Pitch and playback speed can be adjusted
                  - Music is selected on the top screen while Nintendo themed screensavers play on the bottom

             - SD card slot
             - Built in web browser
             - Game downloads with Nintendo Points
             - DSi Shop (aka DSWare)
             - Nintendo will give gamers 1000 points for free if they visit the store by March 2010 -- games will feature four price structures: Free, 200 Points, 500 Points and Premium (800 Points).
             - Considered a complement or "third pillar" to the regular DS and is not a replacement.
             - Official Japanese page: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ds/dsi.html (7th tab shows DS Lite / DSi comparisons)

    • Storage Solution
             - Download games directly to SD cards
             - Faster transfers
             - Spring 2009
    • Play On Wii line of games
             - GCN games remastered for Wii
    • Punch-Out!! (Wii)
    • Sin & Punishment 2 (Wii)
    • Another Code (aka Trace Memory Wii)
    • Endless Ocean 2
    • Samurai Warrior 3 (Wii)
    • New "Tales of...." mother-ship game (Wii)
    • Mii's come to the DS!
    • New DS exercise game using pedometer
    • New WarioWare (DS - presumably for DSi)
    • New Mario and Luigi game (DS)
    • Stage Debut DS??
    • Many, many other Wii and DS games. Watch the videos to see them

That's it for the Japanese Media Summit. The US one is tomorrow. We'll have to see if anything new is revealed tomorrow or if it mostly a presentation of what was shown tonight. However, IGN reports that Madword and The Conduit will be playable tomorrow and many other sources have confirmed the demonstration of new WiiWare games (which were not shown tonight).[/list]

Thank you VERY much for this!

With crazy work schedules and stuff, I had no idea this was even going on now.

    Thank you!

    No problem!

I actually updated it with a bunch more things since you replied. Info about the Nintendo points structure for the DSi Store and a few new DS games (WarioWare, Stage Debut, Mario and Luigi, an exercise game w/ pedometer). Oh, and Mii's are coming to the DS!

Hah! I've heard that "third pillar" garbage before. Still, as a successor to the DS, this is friggin' awesome.
Also, Sin and Punishment 2? Yay!
Punch Out!! for Wii? I am excited but reserevec. I wasn't all that pleased with Wii Sports Boxing.

I saw some Taiko Drum Master kind of game in there. Lots of rhythm/music titles.

Now I just need people to play all these multiplayer party games with.

I sure hope they're putting attention into their online play. Voice chat is good but how reliable will the connection to other players be, especially during actual gaming?

The DSi is more like the Game Boy Color. It's not quite the next generation platform, but it is a big step up from the current system. Most games will likely work on either the DSi or regular DS just fine, but there will definitely be some exclusives (especially if they use the camera or other new features). Downloadable games will definitely be exclusive unless Nintendo reveals someway to transfer them the regular DS.

Two of the first DSi downloadable games are Brain Age remakes. No word yet if Game Boy games will be downloadable.

The DSi doesn't look like something I really want, just because it isn't a "true" next gen console. I'll probably hold off on getting a new handheld for a long while.

I'm still on the original, clunky DS. The DS Lite is certainly not a successor to the DS, and in my opinion, the DSi is not a true successor either. Aside from the camera, music, and online shopping, it may be going slightly backwards, as we're losing DS capabilities and at least five hours of battery life. The true next DS is yet to come, though I'll have to reserve complete judgment until I know more.

I'm glad to see Punch Out! up there - I hope to see more old games remade. As well, MadWorld looks great. Someone out there give some Sega workers a raise for taking a risk. Finally, WarioWare! YAY!

Oh, and Club Nintendo, I'm still not sure... will it be great like Japan? So-so? Like Europe? Will registered products work retroactively?

I feel like Nintendo has to win my loyalty back. They're obviously putting up a fight (especially after their craptastic E3), but they're not there yet.

Those are a lot of new features that you're removing in order to make your point that it is slightly backwards.

On the highest brightness level, the DSi only loses 1-2 hours of battery life.

    What he / she said!

Seriously, I think everything you just said, I'm in agreement with. My sentiments are pretty much exactly the same, and I really hope I won't have to buy a DSi to play the majority of future DS games when that system launches here in the States. I was hoping to get a PSP early next year, so if the DSi ends up being one of those deals where I have to have it to play any new DS games, that's gonna suck.

But it doesn't surprise me in the least that Nintendo isn't moving forward with a truly next-gen DS, because there is still so much milking they can do with the basic technology they already have. With DSi, they can merely tack on some extras that no longer cost a lot to manufacture (ala their approach with Wii), and most fans will line up with mouths foaming to get their hands on one...or two or three.

    Via Gizmodo:
"Battery life bites it big time.

On low brightness, the DS Lite was rated at 15-19 hours of life. The DSi gets only 9-14 in the same conditions. That's a loss of 5-6 hours. Higher brightnesses show less battery loss for the DSi, ranging from 1-5 hours less on "high brightness" and stabilizing to a 1-2 hour reduction on 'highest brightness.'"

How are we losing battery life as we upgrade? That's one to six hours lost, based on your brightness.

Maybe they're taking into account the extra energy required for continuous wifi play? :\ If not, that's gonna be ridiculous when they *do* take that into account.

Does the new DSi have a lot more processing power? Does it have higher volume capabilities? Those could affect battery life, right?

The DSi looks to be in the same boat with me as the DS Lite.  Slap a Triforce on it or I'm not buying it.    Seriously, my original DS works just fine.

Unless there's issue with the games being changed to only play on the DSi, which I highly doubt, I don't really plan on buying one.  Yet, at the same time I don't have a problem with it.  If it means more DS owners then I say the more the merrier.

As for the rest of the conference I'm glad it happened and it's neat to see new games, but it wasn't mind blowing for me.  I'm still waiting for Zelda or Kid Icarus to pop up.    Could be awhile though.
