I and running Internet Explore 6.0 on Windows ME (I know, you're surpprised the site loads at all right). Cuccoscratch will work just fine for a few minutes, to all day. Then, without warning, the page locks up and is listed as not responding. At this point I either have to restart my laptop, or clear my temp internet files. Restarting only fixes it for a short time though, where clearing my cache lasts a much longer time.
No idea why it is happening, and no clue how to fix it. Any advice could help. Thanks.

Does the entire site do that to you, or only after you've started viewing the shoutbox?

Tamagon, don't be a useless ass. Feu, it can happen at anytime. When I was halfway through my Thinking cap post, it froze. I had to recreate the entire thing (although it was for the better). Also, the first time I go to this site, I can't post in the shoutbox until I refresh. Weird huh?

can safely say it's not an IE6 thing. i've tested the site on IE6 numerous times (and again right now) and it works perfectly on it. why..oh why..are you using windows ME?

Because getting a new computer costs money that we don't have yet.

I don't think XP is older than ME. The main problem with that is I have 256 MB of ram. I'll need all that just to run XP.

Does the shoutbox use java? I've had similar issues on another site's java chat (have to refresh to type into the chat field, sometimes the page won't load, etc). Does the site freeze on you even if you type in the address for a page other than the index/shoutbox page and bypass it competely? I know you said it froze on you while posting, but if something funky was going on a few page clicks ago at the main board/shoutbox page, maybe it just took a while to start noticeable problems? Sorry, I don't know.

get a Win 98 disc. that's better than ME! (XP was released Oct 2001, ME was released Q3/4 2000). or even win2k. that was released before ME. win2k sp4 is still in use across a lot of networks where the admins couldn't or didn't want to upgrade to xp. and because it's more of a corporate driven operating system, there's not much in the terms of graphics than there is with xp (it's capable, just the desktop isn't heavily loaded). should work on the same system as ME does. ME's a mashup of 98 and 2k, and a complete failure. if you need a copy, let me know and i'll get you one.
the shoutbox isn't a java applet. the refreshing is done with AJAX (asyncronous javascript), a method called XMLHTTPRequest if anyone's interested. it's a standard thing that most web2.0 sites use these days. except when you post a message. that's a standard form submit that's existed since dynamic web pages first came on the scene. the page then refreshes and the timer starts over.
i know there is an issue with the shoutbox on firefox where the timer actually stops, but since i have no internet at home right now, i can't do anything about it.

Tamagon, don't be a useless ass. Yeah Except, using an outdated web browser AND operating system is probably why this site is freezing.

i agree. it could be something else though, but with that configuration, it's the most likely option. go download adaware from download.com, update it and run a spyware/adware scan on your pc, incase there's a hidden culprit. virus scanner? run that too.. if not, let me know and i'll get you a free one-time scanner/fixer tool (not posting url's right now because it's updated daily).
