New User Registration Disabled

Dear all,

I have disabled new user registration for the time being. There are far too many spam bots hitting the registration page and succeeding, and it's p*ssing me off the number of emails I'm getting for new user registration approvals.

I'm going to see if it calms down for a bit, or I get time to fix the StopForumSpam mod I put in to stop this happening. If anyone knows anyone who's trying to register legitimately and can't, let either me or Hen know, and we can register them manually.

Yeaaaaaaa..... I was seeing these emails as well. No one was posting, everyone was just mass-registering. I've no idea how to tell if they're a person we'd want here or simply a bot...

there is a mod which i installed for the underlying forum software, that didn't work. i'd also installed it on another forum i admin/host, and didn't work their either. the problem was, this other forum had a problem *way* worse than here (until now, that is). so i hacked it apart and made it work.
i've disabled registration until i can remember what files i changed, and pull the hack out of that other forum and install it here. what you'll see in the admin is a red or grey icon next to either of the fields (username, email and IP address). if any of them are red, it means the plugin got a response from the stopforumspam service which indicates that that particular value (or combination of values) has been detected/reported before by other sfs users.

I've fixed the StopForumSpam plugin and re-enabled registration. use registration should now allow users to register and immediately start posting. unless they're tagged as a spammer in SFS, in which case it will hold the user for approval.

admins; an icon against the user's name, email and IP indicates the SFS status of the member. the key's at the bottom of the list of members. you can click on the icon itself if, for instance, it's yellow and you want to double-check it's status. you can re-check by selecting the member from the list, and clicking "check members" at the bottom of the table.

hopefully this will solve the problems =)

mm maybe not. seems there was more to it than just fixing the call to SFS. registration is re-disabled until i can figure it out.
