http://shoddybattle.com/ladder - Explains the rules of the game, what Pokemon are disallowed and how the ladder system works. When you log on and enter the main server (you might have to refresh the lobby list several times), open your team and click on the [find match] tab. If you try and ask someone on the chat for a battle they'll probably just laugh at you and tell you to use the find tab.
http://shoddybattle.com/stats - This is really helpful. It gives a master list of pokemon use depending on players skill levels (weighted). You it while you make your team. ie, don't give your Gengar energyball specifically for Rhyperior and Swampert. This move slot could be used for type coverage against things that are more common/dangerous.
The rankings are pretty much 0 - 1600+, for all practical purposes. When you win, you get points, when you loose, points get subtracted. You can view your ranking (conservative ranking) by right clicking on your name in the server. Also, keep in mind that most of the players on the Shoddy ladder are somewhat experienced.
